Regulations for winter equipment vary across European countries, so it’s important to always check the specific requirements of the destination country.
Here are some examples of the rules:
- Austria: From November 1 to April 15, winter tires are mandatory in snowy or icy conditions, and snow chains may also be required, especially on alpine roads.
- Slovakia: From November 15 to March 31, winter tires are required on snow-covered or icy roads, and snow chains must be carried in mountainous regions.
- Slovenia: From November 15 to March 15, winter tires are required, or at least snow chains must be kept in the car.
- Croatia: During the winter season (November 15 to March 15), drivers must have either winter tires or snow chains in the car to prepare for snowy and icy roads.
Non-Mandatory but Recommended Winter Equipment to Have in Your Car
There are some practical items you should definitely acquire or check to ensure safer and more comfortable driving in winter.
- Antifreeze Coolant
Antifreeze coolant not only protects the engine but also ensures the cooling system functions efficiently all year round. In winter, the right antifreeze concentration is crucial, as it prevents the water in the engine from freezing, which could lead to severe damage. Make sure to use an antifreeze rated to at least -30 °C and get an antifreeze tester to keep your levels in check!
Winter Work Gloves
On cold winter days, gloves are essential, especially when you need to do something around your car quickly, like putting on snow chains or scraping ice off the windows. Good winter gloves not only keep your hands warm but also provide the right grip, which is important for safe and precise work.
Ice Scraper
An ice scraper is a simple but effective tool that is essential for quickly and thoroughly clearing windshields and windows. A sturdy, ergonomically designed scraper saves time in the morning, allowing you to quickly remove ice with ease.
De-icing Spray
Alongside an ice scraper, de-icing spray is a handy companion, especially when a thick layer of ice forms on the windshield. The spray quickly dissolves the ice, making scraping easier and reducing the risk of scratching the glass.
Snow Chains
Snow chains are especially important when driving in mountainous areas or neighboring countries. They improve your car's traction on snowy and icy roads, enhancing safety and reducing the chance of getting stuck. In certain regions, they are even required, so it’s wise to keep snow chains in your car for longer winter trips. We offer snow chains in various sizes, and in addition to traditional chains, our webshop also has textile and plastic snow chains available.
+1 Heated Seat Cover
While many cars today have integrated seat warmers, older models often did not come equipped with this feature. During winter, it’s especially nice to warm up quickly in a cold car – a heated seat cover can help with that.
Winter Preparation: Don’t Leave it to the Last Minute!
Winter brings unique challenges for drivers, but with the right gear, you’ll be prepared for the harshest conditions. Remember, beyond the legally required equipment, additional items can make winter driving safer and more comfortable.
